AYG Event Icons
The Africa Youth Games (AYG) is a continental multi-sport event that features hockey as one of its disciplines, organized in coordination with the African Hockey Federation (AfHF).
Purpose & Organization: The AYG is a major international multi-sport event held every four years. It is organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), with the hockey component managed by the AfHF. The event serves as a development pathway and a direct qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
History & Reinstatement: Hockey was absent from the multi-sport games from 2003 until its reinstatement for the 3rd AYG in 2018. The 2018 tournament in Algiers, Algeria, was the first time a hockey YOG qualifier was incorporated into the AYG.
Format: The hockey competition at the AYG is a youth tournament (U18) played in the Hockey5s format. The 2018 edition featured separate boys’ and girls’ competitions.
2018 Tournament Details: The 3rd African Youth Games took place in Algiers, Algeria, from July 19-28, 2018. The hockey event was held at the Stade Ferhani from July 19-26. Participating nations included South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Algeria, Zambia, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. South Africa won gold in both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments.
Future Editions: The 4th edition of the Africa Youth Games was initially slated for Congo Brazzaville, and the 2025 edition is scheduled to take place in Angola
