Overview
The Africa Cup for Club Championships is a competition organized by the African Hockey Federation, the continental governing body for field hockey in Africa. The African Hockey Federation is affiliated with the International Hockey Federation and has 25 member nations.
Format
The tournament runs separate men’s and women’s editions concurrently, though the women’s competition is numbered slightly behind the men’s — for example, recent editions have been billed as the 36th Men & 27th Women editions and, before that, the 34th Men – 25th Women Editions, indicating the men’s competition started a few years earlier than the women’s.
The 2023 edition (34th Men, 25th Women) was held in Blantyre, Malawi, from 18-26 November 2023, where Kenyan clubs like the Kisumu Lakers were dominant performers.
Earlier, the 33rd Men’s / 24th Women’s edition had a venue change to Nairobi, Kenya, held 13-19 February 2023.
The 32nd Men’s / 23rd Women’s edition took place in 2021. The 35th Men’s / 26th Women’s edition concluded in February 2025 with gold and bronze medal matches decided partly by shootouts.
Clubs that have competed and performed strongly over the years include Sharkia and Eastern Company Club (Egypt), Orange Telkom (Kenya, dominant in the women’s competition), Kenya Police, Kisumu Lakers, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA, formerly CEPS), and Butali Warriors (Kenya). Sharkia has historically been the record championship winner in the men’s competition, while Orange Club of Kenya has been dominant in the women’s competition, winning five championships in a row at one point.
Significance
The tournament serves as the premier continental club-level field hockey competition in Africa, distinct from the Hockey Africa Cup of Nations (a national-team competition governed by the same federation, first held in 1974).
